WashingtonWashington is the capital city of the United States of America, situated in the District of Columbia (D.C.). Tchaikovsky visited Washington from 4/16 May to 6/18 May 1891, staying at the Arlington Hotel. "I took a walk around the city, which is very sweet. It is entirely surrounded by lush, spring verdure... I was at the famous obelisk (the tallest structure in the world apart from the Eiffel Tower), and the Capitol, from which opens out a wonderful view of Washington, literally sinking in the thick, lush verdure of chestnuts, acacias, oaks and maples. From the city to the Soldier's House (a magnificent park, providing shelter for veterans), along some of the best streets, and finally returning to the legation" [1]. On the evening of 5/17 May he visited the music school to hear a student orchestra play two Beethoven concertos, and left for Philadelphia the next morning. External links: Notes:
