Valaam

Valaam (Валаам) is archipelago in the northern portion of Lake Ladoga, lying within the Republic of Karelia (Республика Карелия) in the Russian Federation. During Tchaikovsky's lifetime it was the administrative centre of the Serdobol'skii district (Сердобольсккий уезд) of Vyborg province (Выборгская губерния) in the Russian Empire.

While staying at Peterhof during the summer of 1865, Tchaikovsky and his friend Aleksei Apukhtin travelled to the ancient monastery on Valaam Island, which made an "indelible impression" on both men [1]
