Pompeii

Pompeii (Pompei) is a city in the Naples (Napoli) province and Campania region of Italy, famous for the ruins of its ancient Roman city. During Tchaikovsky's lifetime it was part of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies (Regno delle Due Sicilie), before becoming part of the Kingdom of Italy in 1861.

Tchaikovsky visited Pompeii twice:

  • 26 April/8 May 1874 — during a spring vacation in Italy he travelled to the ruins, which "made a most powerful impression" [1] .
  • 28 February/12 March 1882 — taking his brother Modest to Pompeii, having recently also visited the ruins at Herculaneum.
