Pavlovsk

Pavlovsk (Павловск) is a Russian town 25 km south of Saint Petersburg, in the Pushkin region (Пушкинский район) of the federal district of Saint Petersburg. During Tchaikovsky's lifetime it formed part of the Tsarskoe Selo district (Царскосельский уезд) and Saint Petersburg province (Санкт-Петербургская губерния) of the Russian Empire.

Tchaikovsky visited Pavlovsk on several occasions, including:

  • 7/19 September 1879 — to hear the Scherzo of his Symphony No. 4 performed at a symphony concert. "The performance was mediocre, but to me it was nevertheless pleasant to hear it" [1].
  • 16/28 June 1886 — on a day trip from Saint Petersburg. "Walked. Music played not interesting" [2].
  • 8/20 July 1888 — to hear Julius Laube's orchestra, which was "excellent" [3]

The first public performance of any of Tchaikovsky's works took place here on 30 August/11 September 1865, when the Characteristic Dances were conducted at Pavlovsk Park by Johann Strauss the younger.
