Mlety

Mlety (Mleti, Mleta) is a small town in the South Ossetia region of Georgia. During Tchaikovsky's lifetime it was a station on the Georgian military road, in the Tiflis province (Тифлисская губерния) of the Russian Empire.

Tchaikovsky stopped in Mlety on two occasions:

  • 30 July/11 August–31 July/12 August 1886 — travelling from Vladikavkaz to Tiflis. He was permitted to stay overnight in the royal quarters, where "after the abomination of Vladikavkaz it felt very pleasant" [1]
  • 2/14 May–3/15 May 1889 — again staying overnight in the Imperial suite, this time travelling in the opposite direction.
