Marseille

Marseille (Marseilles) is the third-largest city in France, and is the administrative centre of the Bouches-du-Rhône department, and of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region.

Tchaikovsky visited Marseille on two occasions:

  • 11/23 May–15/27 May 1886, at the end of a voyage down the Volga River and the Mediterranean Sea. He visited the Palais de Cristal and Palais Longchamps, and was impressed by the Rue Canebière. "Marseille is a very attractive city" [1], he concluded.
  • 4/16 April 1889 — after a concert engagement in London, Tchaikovsky boarded a steamship at Marseille in order to visit his brother Anatolii in Tiflis.
