Leipzig is the largest city in the federal state of Saxony (Sachsen) in Germany. During Tchaikovsky's lifetime it
was part of the Kingdom of Prussia, and became part of the German Empire in
Tchaikovsky visited Leipzig on two occasions:
- 19/31 December 1887–26 December 1887/7 January 1888 — paying frequent
visits to Adolph Brodsky and his wife Anna at their home in the city.
The main purpose of his visit was to rehearse and conduct his Suite No. 1 at a Gewandhaus
concert (24 December/5 January), but he also attended a chamber concert in
his honour, and met several notable musicians, including Johannes Brahms, Carl Reinecke and Edvard Grieg.
- 15/27 January–21 January/2 February 1888 — dining frequently again
Brodskys, he went to the theatre and various concerts, and met Gustav Mahler
and Ferruccio Busoni
for the first time.
- 29 January/10 February–31 January/12 February 1888 — after concert engagements
in Berlin, he returned to Leipzig, and watched a
special performance on his behalf of Wagner's Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg
(29 January/10 February), conducted by Arthur Nikisch.
- 17 February/1 March–19 February/3 March 1889 — visiting the Brodskys again,
where he heard a private performance of his own String Quartet No. 3 (18 February/2
