Cologne
Cologne (Köln) is the fourth-largest city in Germany, and part of
the state of North Rhine-Westphalia (Nordrhein-Westfalen). In Tchaikovsky's lifetime it was part
of the Rhine Province of the Kingdom of Prussia, becoming part of the German
Empire from 1871.
Tchaikovsky visited Cologne on three occasions:
- 6/18 July 1873 — an overnight stop while travelling between Dresden
and Zurich.
- 15/27 July 1887 — stopping on his way to see
Nikolai Kondrat'ev in Aachen; while
waiting for the 6 pm train he paid two "very long" visits to Cologne
Cathedral, and strolled along the banks of the Rhine [1].
- 30 January/11 February–1/13 February 1889 — to conduct the
"excellent" Cölner Städtisches Orchester in a performance of his Suite No. 3 at the
Gürzenich (31 January/12 February); he also had meetings with the
musicians Franz Wüllner and Ferdinand Hiller, and attended a dinner given
in his honour [2].
