BakuBaku (Baki) is the capital, the largest city, and the largest port in Azerbaijan. During Tchaikovsky's lifetime it formed part of the Baku district (Бакинская уезд) and capital of Baku province (Бакинская губерния) of the Russian Empire, having been part of the Shemakha province (Шемахинской губернии) until 1859. Tchaikovsky stayed overnight at a guest house in Baku from 28 May/9 June–29 May/10 June 1887, on his way to visit his brother Anatoly in Tiflis. His view of the city was unusually favourable: "This city unexpectedly turned out to be completely charming to me in every respect, i.e. properly and beautifully houses, clean, yet still remarkably characterful, as an eastern (namely Persian) element predominates there so strongly" [1].
