Avignon

Avignon is a city in the department of Vaucluse and province of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur in south-eastern France, on the left bank of the river Rhône.

Tchaikovsky passed through Avignon during a journey by steamship on the Rhône from Lyons to Montpellier in late July/early August 1876. He was accompanied on his journey by his brother Modest, Nikolay Konradi, and the latter's governess Sofya Yershova [1].
