Nikolai Tchaikovsky

Nikolai Il'ich Tchaikovsky (Николай Ильич Чайковский) was the composer's older brother, born on 9/21 May 1838, the eldest son of Il'ia  Tchaikovsky and his wife Aleksandra (b. Assier).

Nikolai Tchaikovsky followed in his father's footsteps as a mining engineer. Towards the end of his life he worked in Moscow at Iakovlev's publishing house, where he helped to publish a compilation of his brother's musical-critical articles in 1898.

In 1872 Nikolai married Ol'ga Sergeevna Denis'eva (d. abt 1919), and in 1886 they adopted the son of their niece Tat'iana Davydova, who became Georgii Tchaikovsky.

Nikolai Tchaikovsky died on 21 November/4 December 1911 in Moscow, and was buried at Novodevich'e Cemetery, Moscow.
