Чайковский Tchaikovsky

Notes:
  1. In a telegram wired from Saint Petersburg on 27 January/8 February 1887 Emiliia Pavlovskaia had informed Tchaikovsky of the successful performance of Evgenii Onegin at the Mariinskii Theatre the previous evening, in which the notable baritone Pavel Akinfievich Khokhlov (1854–1919) had sung the title-role and she herself had sung Tat'iana. Alexander III had attended the performance, which was put on specially at his request. Pavlovskaia's telegram has been published in: Чайковский на московской сцене (1940), p. 384, and its text is as follows: "Yesterday Onegin—brilliant success. Khokhlov—mighty furore. [He is] an ideal, unique Onegin. [Your] sincerely devoted Tat'iana. Pavlovskaia" [back]
