Чайковский Tchaikovsky

Notes:
  1. This telegram was sent by Tchaikovsky in response to a letter from Emiliia Pavlovskaia written around 10/22 January 1887, in which she informed him that, contrary to what she had been promised earlier, the management of the Saint Petersburg Mariinskii Theatre could not release her from her obligations in the last week of January so that she could come to Moscow and attend the première of Cherevichki. Pavlovskaia said that she was very upset by this, but nevertheless asked Tchaikovsky to let her know the date of the première: "I shall at least mentally, with my heart, be following the course of your opera". As this telegram shows, Tchaikovsky was still overestimating the generosity of the Mariinskii Theatre's management towards its singers. Pavlovskaia's letter has been published in: Чайковский на московской сцене (1940), p. 373 [back]
