History

Sketches for this vocal work are contained in Tchaikovsky's Notebook for 1887. The composer’s diary entry for 1/13 February 1887 mentions that he was reading Turgenev’s short story of the same name [1].

The words do not appear in the musical sketch.

  1. Дневники П. И. Чайковского (1923), p. 125 [back] . It should also be noted that in letter 2385 to Karl August Tavaststjerna, dated 8/20 November 1883, Tchaikovsky discussed a romance set to a poem by Tavaststjerna's, also called Song of Triumphant Love.
