History

Composed at the beginning of 1870 in Moscow. In a letter to Aleksandra Davydova of 5/17 February 1870, Tchaikovsky reported that two of his piano pieces were to be printed. One of them was the Capriccio, Op. 8, and the other was the Valse-scherzo, Op. 7.

The composer dedicated the Capriccio to his colleague at the Moscow Conservatory, the pianist and former student of Franz Liszt, Professor Karl Klindworth.

Published by Pyotr Jurgenson in April 1870.
