History

Written in December 1875 in Moscow. Completely finished on 17/29 December 1875 (according to the autograph date on the manuscript). It appears that the chorus was commissioned by the Directorate of the Saint Petersburg section of the Russian Musical Society [to celebrate Osip Petrov’s 50th year as a performer]. The words were written by Nikolay Nekrasov.

The first performance took place on 24 April/6 May 1876 at a festival concert at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory, on the occasion of Osip Petrov’s jubilee. The cantata was performed by students of the conservatory, conducted by Karl Davydov.
