Note ‘Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser’ was the national anthem of Austria from 1797 to 1918. Music by Joseph Haydn (1732–1809), words by Lorenz Leopold Haschka (1749–1827). The same tune set to the words ‘Deutschland über Alles’ was later adopted as the national anthem of Germany.

History

No information survives on this orchestration, which was probably required in connection with a visit of the Austrian Emperor to Moscow in 1874. On the manuscript score. Tchaikovsky wrote: "Гот эрхальте. Gott erhalte Franz den König. Maestro Чайковский".
